LOCAL NEWS-
It has been 50 years since Founding Provost Stanley Sahlstrom welcomed students to the University of Minnesota Technical Institute. The U of M Crookston will commemorate this historical time by marking Founder’s Day on Wednesday, September 21, 2016. A celebration for the community and campus will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in Bede Ballroom, Sargeant Student Center with cake and refreshments along with remarks by Chancellor Fred Wood. All are welcome to attend and parking permits will not be required.
In 1966, the 26 members of the faculty taught classes in three academic divisions: agriculture, business, and general studies to the incoming class of 187 students. On November 30 of that year, the campus held dedication ceremonies and introduced the Trojan mascot. Over the years, the campus grew and became a regional hub in northwest Minnesota for education, outreach, and service. The campus transitioned to begin offering baccalaureate degrees in the fall of 1993 when it became the first laptop university in the country and adopted the Golden Eagle as its mascot.
